Bak Kut Teh

Among the different types of local foods, my favourite is Bak Kut Teh.  Bak Kut Teh consists of meaty pork ribs simmered in a complex broth of herbs and spices.  In Singapore, there are two styles of Bak Kut Teh – a clear soup with a peppery taste, or a thick and cloudy soup with herbal taste.                   I prefer a bowl of peppery Bak Kut Teh.  I always ask for refills.

with my Bak Kut Teh, namely pig’s stomach, liver and salted vegetables.  The combination of these dishes never fails to overwhelm my senses!

A bowl of Bak Kut Teh would probably be the “soup for the soul” on a rainy day.  But what if it does not rain?  Don’t worry! Bak Kut Teh will be the energy boosting soup just for you.

My Favourite Local Food

Roti Prata is a fried flour-based pancake that is cooked over a flat grill. It is prepared by flipping the dough into a large thin layer before folding the outside edges inwards. Other ingredients are also added into the dough during the cooking process. It is usually served with a vegetable or meat-based curry.

However, I cannot take too spicy food. I prefer to dip my Roti Prata in sugar. Eating Roti Prata for breakfast has become a weekend routine for my family.  The Roti Prata stall is just a stone’s throw away from my house.  The dough may contain high amounts of ghee(fat) and  many people may think it is unhealthy to eat it.  I think that as

long as it is eaten in moderation (I keep to two pieces of Roti Prata per week), this  could make a good breakfast choice.

As hectic as our schedules can sometimes be, my father believed that the family that eats together stays together.  I enjoy bonding with my family over a plate of Roti Prata!

Our National Dish

Chicken rice is the quintessential dish in Singapore.  It is a delectable dish that can be found at almost every dining spot, from humble hawker centres to high-end restaurants. Look at the succulent, freshly cooked chicken hanging on hooks neatly in a row at a food stall, it will surely make you salivate.

with pandan leaves and chicken slices, which will then be shaped into balls before it becomes cold. These rice balls made it easier for a travelling peddler to serve his clients; he did it without plates and could easily wrap up the balls in banana leaves. Sadly, the rice balls are now seldom seen in Singapore.

A plate of fragrant chicken rice is best savoured with a spicy chilli and ginger paste. As a healthy person, I also prefer steamed chicken to roasted ones.

An earlier version of the dish had rice compacted into balls. The rice balls are made up of shorter-grained rice, after being cooked in a large pot

In the olden days, you will find people eating Bak Kut Teh in the morning for breakfast.  But now, we eat Bak Kut Teh any time of the day!

“Ya Hua” is synonymous with Bak Kut Teh. It is also my go to place when I need to satisfy my craving for a bowl of robust peppery broth.

I would order three side dishes along

Our Singaporean Snack

“Kueh Tutu, dear? Do you want to try it?” my mother asked with a smile.

“No, thanks,” I replied, still staring at the five round, white and tiny cakes with orange spots that she was holding. They were on mini, square pandan leaves.

My mother said it reminded her of her childhood when her papa bought her this delicacy.

“I’ve changed my mind,” I said sheepishly. She smiled at me and gave me a bite of the Kueh Tutu in her hand. It was love at first bite! The white covering was soft and the orange filling was mildly sweet and crunchy.

One bite became three bites and I had not one but three!

“What does the name ‘Kueh Tutu’ mean?” I asked my mother.“Kueh’ means cake in Malay but I do not know what ‘Tutu’ means,” my mother confessed.

“Perhaps Mr Tutu created this dish,” I answered cheekily.

Well, I learnt that the name of the cake, ‘Kueh Tutu’, is derived from the sound made by the charcoal-heated steamers that were used to cook these cakes in the past. To me, this is indeed a uniquely Singaporean snack!

Family Bonding

Family Bonding is a time where you bond with your family and have fun with them. For example, when you play sports or games together as a family you get to know and understand each other better. My

Family Bonding

Family Bonding is a time where family members come together as one to have a fun time with each other. During this time, families spend time meaningfully together.          Family bonding is very important as both parents often work and children are involved in many different activities in school. Our family life is a vital part of our lives. How we treat our family and the respect we give each other will affect our relationship with

our family members. That is why it is crucial for families to bond.

My family bonds by watching Korean dramas every day after eating our dinner. One of the dramas we are currently watching is ‘What happened to my family’. We also like to go swimming when we have free time. I always treasure my time with my family. They are most important in my life.
